Emergency Medical Services
HealthONE North Suburban Medical Center (NSMC) Emergency Medical Services Department offers a comprehensive training program for individuals interested in pursuing a career in the emergency medical field. NSMC has been successfully training EMTs since 1975 and all of our courses meet Colorado State training guidelines.
The program faculty are state-certified instructors who are selected on the basis of their experience and teaching ability. They include physicians, nurses, EMT-Bs, and EMT-Ps. They bring to the course their knowledge and insight through education and work experience.
The courses are competitively priced and the initial EMT-Basic course is eligible for college credit through Red Rocks Community College.
Our training center is conveniently located just north of Denver in Thornton with ample, free parking.

Program Details:
Emergency Medical Technician - Basic
The EMT-Basic course follows the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment and EMS standards and guidelines. The course is 4 months in length and consists of 140 hours of classroom training and 66 hours of clinical hours. The clinical experience incorporates use of the Emergency Department at North Suburban Medical Center, local ambulance services, and local fire rescue services. At the completion of the course, students will be eligible to take National Registry exam. Class registration form
Entrance Requirements
- 18 years of age
- HS diploma or equivalent
- CPR Certification
- Verification of two hepatitis vaccinations prior to the start of clinical
- The results of TB skin test prior to the start of class. (Must be within six months prior to class starting.)
- Must be able to lift 250 lbs. with another person
- Physician's authorization release.
EMT-Basic and Paramedic Refreshers
These courses each consist of 48 hours of classroom and skills labs. After successful completion of the Refresher courses, the candidate will be able to sit for the National Registry written exam. Class registration form
Advanced Paramedic Transport Course
This course is a 12 hour course designed to address the current scope of practice of the Paramedic in the setting of Interfacility Transports. The course will be presented in a lecture format with skills training of ventilators, IV pumps, etc. This course is for the Paramedic who wishes to gain a greater knowledge base in this area. The course completion certificate is verifiable for CE credit by the State of Colorado. This is not a certification course. Prerequisite: State EMT-P certification.
EMT -Basic IV
This course is a 20-hour basic IV Therapy course designed for the EMT-Basic IV curriculum and meets the requirements of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, EMS Division. Students will learn the basic concepts of Emergency Treatment that require IV Therapy and Phlebotomy skills. The course also consists of EMT-Basic patient care IV skills as well as clinical education time. This course is a prerequisite for Paramedic School. Prerequisites: EMT-Basic Certification. EMT - Basic EKG Interpretation
This course is a 24-hour Basic EKG Interpretation course designed to meet the education requirements established by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, EMS Division. The course is a basic introduction to EKG interpretation skills and is a prerequisite for Paramedic School. Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course. Class registration form
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Basic Life Support classes are offered monthly for re-certification candidates and quarterly for initial certification. Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course. Class registration form
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
EMS Education provides Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification courses for the healthcare professional, offering classes on a quarterly schedule. The goal of ACLS is to provide healthcare professionals with didactic and practical skills training. Prerequisites: EMT-Paramedic. Class registration form
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification courses are for the healthcare professional, with classes offered in the spring and fall. The goal of PALS is to provide healthcare professionals with pediatric didactic and practical skills training. Class registration form
Pediatric Education for the Prehospital Provider (PEPP)
This certification course has been developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and includes the most recent educational developments in prehospital pediatric care. Intended audience is any BLS or ALS prehospital professional. The BLS certificate consists of the first day only and is verifiable for 8 hours of CE credit. The ALS certificate consists of both days of the course and is verifiable for 16 hours of CE credit. Class registration form
