Diet & Nutrition After Surgery
Diet & Exercise Are Important Elements of Post-Surgery Care for Weight-Loss Surgery Patients
Following surgery at the Center for Weight-Loss Surgery at North Suburban Medical Center, you will need to follow specific diet recommendations in order to ensure that your bariatric surgery procedure is successful. Surgery is only one component to reaching your desired weight-loss goal—diet and exercise will be key, too.
Nutritional Supplements
Protein supplements, including daily vitamins and minerals will be necessary for the rest of your life. Specific post-surgery diets vary depending upon the procedure you undergo.
New Eating Habits
Another important nutritional element is the amount of food that you consume following surgery. Now that your stomach is smaller, the amount of food you eat will be greatly reduced. With a smaller stomach, the food that you do eat needs to provide maximum nutrition.
After weight-loss surgery, your diet will progress from a liquid diet to a pureed diet to a soft diet and then to a modified regular diet. We have found that over time, our patients attitudes toward eating changes—patients begin to eat to live instead of living to eat!
Exercise
Following recovery from bariatric surgery, regular cardiovascular exercise and strength training must be part of your daily routine. Exercise is also vitally important to helping you reach your weight-loss goal.
